Rock Desk Weights (You may also call these paper weights)
Rocks or stones have a pronounced impact (no pun intended) on human beings. There is no getting away from it whoever you are, if you are traveling great distances or just out for a walk in the neighborhood, rocks make a special impression (no pun intended). When people take a break on a driving vacation and they stop by a riverside rest area most of the people find themselves to a shores edge where they pick up stones. Some are thrown into the river. The kids all try to skip them. Some are just carried along for a time and sometimes brought into the car and carried to a far destination. Often people walk shorelines or beaches on a special quest for certain kinds of rocks like ones with special shapes or pleasing colors. Occasionally a rock will be an obvious keeper like an agate, a piece of rose quartz or it may display a fossil of a leaf or animal fragment.
One thing for sure any rock or stone is far older than any of us and older than practically anything we observe in nature. There is an expression, "Old as the hills," and that expression comes from the science we have that tell us rocks have generally been around for millions of years and many very likely as long as four or five billion years.
The rocks that we notice where ever we go therefore, were actually laying around when Columbus discovered America, when when the giant was felled by David, when Dan Patch won the trotting race at the Minnesota State Fair and when, well when all things of any consequence at all took place on this earth.
We have created a number of beautiful desk weights in all sorts of rocks and stones but perhaps the most important of all of them is what we call the "I Was There" rock. These rocks are a splendid reminder to anyone that particular great events have occurred and the very rock we hold in our hands may well be a silent witness to the event. When Stephen was stoned to death the very rock we pick up or notice might have been there as a silent witness or may have even taken part in his killing. If that is to far fetched for a particular individual to imagine and it may be for many the rock certainly could have been a hammer head or club for an ancient person hunting and living in the very area that you find yourself.
Everyone puts his own value system to work when he looks at or picks up rocks. A scientist sees in a rock matter that froze from release of energy as a part of a "Big Bang." Someone given to evolution doesn't think too much about rocks actually but assume that whatever life first pulled itself upon hard land from an ancient slime did so upon some sort of rock land structure. A religious Jew, Christian or other person with beliefs embracing the idea that God created the earth and all other things can well imagine that the rock he holds has changed little since Adam and Eve were there with God in the Garden of Eden some six thousand years earlier.

We could think of no better way to acknowledge the near infinite quality of rocks and stones than to etch into the rock itself the expression, "I Was There." The rock or stone you hold or view or kick was definitely around when all of the events important any of us took place and it may even have been present at the event itself or perchance it may even have been part of the event. Pretty spooky! |
